Interview from Berliner Kurier (08/07). I have tried to translate it as best I can. I think what Damon says is fair enough.
Do you no longer feel bitter towards Brett now over 15 years later? Well bitter is not quite right. We were never friends, he was just my then girlfriend’s ex and of course I instantly disliked him. Perfectly natural response. It was a very long time ago, I really never think about all that shit. Let's just say we’re no longer playing in the same league anymore. Are you hinting at your success since Blur compared to Brett and Suede's lesser fortunes? No you’re not getting me on that. What did you think of the reunion of Brett and (ex-suede guitarist) Bernard Butler? Thought nothing. It did nothing, was nothing. I must admit I saw it as a desperate attempt by them to reclaim some sort of success on the back of their past. Bernard in particular - he threw it all away, he won't admit it but he was the biggest fool in the world for doing that. He always wanted to be Johnny Marr, he always said that and what did he do? Walk away from it to do what? Sulk, for 20 years. They wrote some very good songs, I admit that now, but really what came out of that reunion? I still think Brett can be a great artist and like Liam (Gallagher) what he needs is a proper songwriter behind him. |
